We are pleased to report on a highly effective aesthetic and psychological upgrade to our school facilities, made possible by your donations. Prior to this intervention, the school struggled with low attendance rates and a general lack of student motivation, which was exacerbated by a visually unappealing physical environment dominated by deteriorated, peeling blue paint. To address this, the project team utilized color theory to design a psychological transformation of the space. We implemented a specialized technical paint that seals the concrete block directly without requiring plaster, allowing us to rapidly establish a vibrant finish using color palettes that children fundamentally associate with happiness and security. The school now projects a renewed sense of energy and joy. We anticipate these environmental improvements will encourage consistent daily attendance and optimize the students' emotional readiness for learning, ultimately driving better academic performance. Thank you for your vital partnership.

About the Community

The village of Agua Zarca Abajo, located in the lowlands of the municipality of San Jacinto, Chiquimula, is characterized by a warm climate typical of the Dry Corridor region. It has a population of 510 people according to the Ministry of Health. Its economy is predominantly agricultural, centered on the seasonal cultivation of corn and beans, along with backyard poultry farming for family consumption. In the educational sector, the community has preschool, primary, and middle school facilities, which have required critical structural improvements, such as replacing deteriorated roofs to ensure student safety. This community receives students from other villages such as Zapote, Pueblo Nuevo, Lomas, and other areas within the village of Agua Zarca. Access to healthcare is supported by environmental sanitation programs, prioritizing the distribution of water filters to combat the incidence of parasitic diseases. Patients receive care at the health post in the village of Agua Zarca Arriba or in the urban area. Their mobility is less challenging, although it relies on roads that erode during the winter, connecting the residents to the municipal capital for trade and emergency services. Furthermore, the community, being located parallel to the San Nicolas ravine, suffers from flooding during periods of heavy rain. The village's development is linked to improving housing and strengthening the resilience of its public infrastructure to the area's climate challenges.
