Our educational community recently faced a terrifying reality: the school's stage roof was in imminent danger of collapsing. Years of weather had left the wooden beams and sheets in an advanced state of deterioration, creating a constant safety hazard for everyone on the school. Thanks to your generous support, that danger is completely gone! We have successfully replaced the damaged, organic materials with a high-quality, durable metal structure. We also use custom-made metal sheets designed to completely prevent water infiltration, even during heavy downpours. The risk of physical incidents has been entirely eliminated, and our students and teachers finally have a safe, covered space to gather without the fear of structural instability. Thank you for keeping our school community safe.

About the Community

The village of Agua Zarca Abajo, located in the lowlands of the municipality of San Jacinto, Chiquimula, is characterized by a warm climate typical of the Dry Corridor region. It has a population of 510 people according to the Ministry of Health. Its economy is predominantly agricultural, centered on the seasonal cultivation of corn and beans, along with backyard poultry farming for family consumption. In the educational sector, the community has preschool, primary, and middle school facilities, which have required critical structural improvements, such as replacing deteriorated roofs to ensure student safety. This community receives students from other villages such as Zapote, Pueblo Nuevo, Lomas, and other areas within the village of Agua Zarca. Access to healthcare is supported by environmental sanitation programs, prioritizing the distribution of water filters to combat the incidence of parasitic diseases. Patients receive care at the health post in the village of Agua Zarca Arriba or in the urban area. Their mobility is less challenging, although it relies on roads that erode during the winter, connecting the residents to the municipal capital for trade and emergency services. Furthermore, the community, being located parallel to the San Nicolas ravine, suffers from flooding during periods of heavy rain. The village's development is linked to improving housing and strengthening the resilience of its public infrastructure to the area's climate challenges.
