June 2026
Due to a massive surge in student enrollment, our school was suffering from severe, daily overcrowding. We actually had the walls for an additional classroom, but the space sat completely unusable left entirely exposed to the blistering sun and heavy rains because it lacked a roof. Thanks to your generous support, we were able to step in and finish the job! We modified the existing structure by installing a sturdy metal sheet roof, finally transforming those empty walls into a fully functional, protected classroom. This simple yet critical fix has completely changed the school day. Our educational community now has a brand-new, operational learning space, allowing us to comfortably and with dignity redistribute our students eliminating overcrowding and giving everyone a suitable environment to teach and learn. Thanks to your partnership with Vivid Roots Collective, this is about to change. Our roof installation project at the Minas Arriba village school will provide these children with something every student deserves: a dry, secure place to learn. The new metal roofing system won't just keep the rain out it will transform how education happens in this community. Teachers will be able to maintain consistent lesson plans regardless of weather, and students can focus on their studies instead of dodging leaks. When we visited the school, the excitement was palpable. Children pressed their faces against the windows as our team surveyed the building, and teachers shared their dreams of uninterrupted learning days. Principal MarΓa Elena told us, "This roof represents hope for our children's futures." With construction beginning soon, the sounds of hammers and hope will echo through the mountains of Chiquimula, building not just a roof, but a foundation for generations of learners in Minas Arriba.

About the Community

The village of Minas Arriba, located in the highlands of the municipality of San Juan Ermita, Chiquimula, has a rugged topography and a climate that ranges from temperate to warm. With a population of approximately 1,000, its economy is deeply rooted in mountain agriculture, particularly coffee production and the cultivation of staple grains on hillsides. In the educational sphere, the community has primary and preschools that have been the focus of efforts to improve classroom facilities, seeking to enhance the structural safety of the buildings in the face of the high-altitude climatic conditions. Community health is addressed through prevention, with a critical emphasis on water security, promoting the use of storage and purification systems to compensate for the difficulty of accessing permanent water sources. Mobility is one of the most significant logistical challenges, as access from the municipal seat involves traveling on unpaved roads with steep inclines, requiring the use of four-wheel-drive vehicles for transporting cargo and passengers. The local development of the village depends on the stability of its roads and investment in public infrastructure that mitigates geographical isolation.
