## Transforming Dreams into Digital Opportunities in San Jacinto In the heart of San Jacinto, Chiquimula, a quiet transformation is taking shape at Escuela Jose Angel Palma. What was once an ordinary classroom is being reimagined as the school's first computer laboratory—a space that will open doors to digital learning for hundreds of rural Guatemalan students. The concrete floors are being polished, electrical systems carefully installed, and walls painted with fresh hope as this community prepares to bridge the digital divide that has long separated their children from 21st-century opportunities. For families in this area, access to technology has remained frustratingly out of reach. Parents who work the land dream of their children having skills that could take them beyond traditional farming, while still honoring their roots and community. This new computer lab represents more than just upgraded infrastructure—it's a gateway to digital literacy, research capabilities, and career preparation that will serve students for generations to come. The excitement is palpable as teachers prepare for training and students eagerly anticipate their first computer classes. This project, made possible through community partnership and donor support, will ensure that geographic location no longer determines technological access. When complete, the lab will serve as a beacon of possibility, proving that rural communities can thrive in our interconnected world while maintaining their cultural identity and strong community bonds.

The students faced a severe digital divide, lacking an adequate and well-equipped space to learn essential technological skills for today's world, thus limiting their competitiveness and academic future. This is especially concerning given that the school is located in an urban area but serves students from nearby villages where economic resources are too limited to afford computer access. A multi-purpose room was transformed into a functional computer lab, adapting the general infrastructure (painting, windows, electrical, door improvements, floor replacement, television and furniture) to protect and organize the technological equipment in a pedagogical manner. The educational offering has been modernized; now children have access to digital tools in a safe environment, allowing them to develop technological skills that were previously unattainable in their community.

About the Community

The population is 1,037, according to the Ministry of Health. The urban area serves as the main administrative and service center for the region. Its economy is more diversified than that of the villages, based on formal and informal commerce, the provision of government services, and the receipt of remittances, although it maintains a strong connection to the collection and distribution of regional agricultural production. In the educational sphere, it concentrates the provision of secondary and vocational education (such as INED), receiving students from various rural communities seeking technical training. Healthcare is centralized at the local Health Center, which coordinates epidemiological surveillance and urban sanitation campaigns. Mobility is fluid compared to rural areas, with paved roads that facilitate the constant transit of motorcycle taxis and heavy transport vehicles connecting to the route to Chiquimula and Esquipulas. Current urban development focuses on the modernization of public buildings, solid waste management, and the improvement of school infrastructure to meet the growing demand of the urban student population.
